Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a type of oral prosthetic that serve as replacement tooth roots. During dental implant surgery, your dentist places a series of titanium posts into the spaces where your teeth used to sit. Following surgery, you return home for 3-4 months to recover. During this time, your bone tissue grows around each implant, securing them to your jaw.

Once your gums heal, your dentist connects a small metal attachment, known as an abutment, to each implant. The abutment connects to a crown, bridge, or set of implant-supported dentures. Dental implants restore your smile to its near-original condition and help you chew, speak, and bite more confidently.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

If you’re missing some or all of your permanent teeth, you’re probably a good candidate for dental implants. However, you also need to have healthy gums and enough volume in your jaw to hold the implants. If you have gum disease or low bone density, your dentist might recommend a bone graft or sinus lift before moving forward.

During your initial consultation, you should also let your dentist know about any chronic health problems you’re living with, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. These ailments won’t necessarily disqualify you from getting dental implants, but they may increase your complications during recovery.

What are the advantages of dental implants?

Dental implants present an array of benefits, including:

  • Improved confidence
  • Easier eating
  • Improved comfort
  • Improved speech
  • Durability

Dental implants also improve your oral health. If you’re missing permanent teeth, you’re at a higher risk of gum recession and bone loss. Your remaining teeth can also move around and shift out of place. Dental implants prevent these and other problems from occurring.

What is the process for getting dental implants?

At Revive Dentistry, getting dental implants usually takes two appointments and a period of about six months. While this might seem like a long period of time, it’s important to remember that with proper care, dental implants can last for decades.

If your dentist determines you’re a good candidate for dental implants, they administer a local anesthetic to numb your tooth roots and gums. Once the anesthesia sets in, your dentist makes a series of tiny incisions in your gum tissue and carefully inserts each implant into your jaw bone. After surgery, you return home for a few months while your gums heal.

Once your gums finish healing, you return to Revive Dentistry for your second appointment. At your second appointment, your dentist takes impressions of your remaining teeth and uses the impressions to make crowns, bridges, or implant-supported dentures using the CEREC milling machine. After milling your new prosthetics, your dentist carefully attaches them to your implants. You leave the office with a healthy new smile.
