Sedation Dentistry

Anxiety-free dental care…does that sound too good to be true?  Now it can be a reality, thanks to sedation dentistry, otherwise known as sleep dentistry.  Available at Revive for patients in Washington, D.C., Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Alexandria, and surrounding communities, sedation dentistry allows patients to receive dental treatment with virtually no anxiety or discomfort. 

How does sedation dentistry work?

Dr. Shila Yazdani and Dr. Michael M. Mortazie provide sedation dentistry by means of oral sedatives.  Patients simply take a small pill an hour or two before their appointments.  The sedative produces a deeply relaxed yet conscious state so that patients arrive for treatment tranquil and relaxed.  Most patients hardly notice when the anesthesia is administered at the beginning of the appointment.  The patient is completely relaxed yet conscious during the procedure so that he or she can respond to simple commands.  Patients can return home after their appointments and relax for the rest of the day, and many patients have little to no memory of the procedure.

K7 Evaluation System

The K7 Evaluation System is used to help relieve myofacial pain dysfunction and other TMJ symptoms by precisely diagnosing the cause of the symptoms.  The K7 system uses the following equipment:

Computerized Mandibular Scanning (CMS)
CMS assesses the functionality of the jaw joint by precisely measuring the rotation of the jaw, deterioration of the joint, and quality of occlusion.  This detailed assessment allows a dentist to determine the whether the TM joint is causing the disorder.

Electromyography (EMG)
EMG uses surface electrodes placed on the skin to measure the activity of the facial muscles.  Facial muscles that are overactive may play a role in TMJ tension and pain.

Sonography measures sounds made by the TMJ system as the jaw moves.  The sonographic technique accommodates intra-capsular interference to produce a more accurate diagnosis. 

Transcutaneous Electro Neural Stimulation (TENS)
The TENS system was specifically designed for treating neurological and myofacial pain.  Through electrodes placed near the ears, the TENS system delivers mild electric impulses that relax the jaw and facial muscles.  When the muscles are relaxed, facial pain is reduced, and a doctor can more accurately determine the optimal occlusion of the bite. 


Revive is pleased to provide SimPlant® technology, which allows our dentists to provide computer-guided placement of dental implants.  The SimPlant® system provides digital 3D images of the teeth and facial structure, which an implant dentist uses to plan the placement prior to surgery.  This represents a significant advance over previous methods, which only provided two-dimensional X-ray images that did little to prepare a dentist for surgery.  Now, SimPlant® technology makes placement of implants extremely accurate and precise. 

The Wand

Studies suggest that about 8 percent of adults fear the needle prick of the syringe used to administer some anesthetics.  The Wand is a welcome solution to this problem, since it allows anesthesia to be delivered more comfortably and effectively.  It does this in two ways. First, it provides a flow of anesthetic ahead of the needle, which numbs the mouth tissues before the needle touches them.  Second, it minimizes pressure by regulating the flow of the painkiller.  The Wand also often reduces the amount of anesthetic necessary, thus minimizing numbness of the face, tongue, and lips.  Our Washington, D.C. practice uses the Wand with sedation dentistry, to place white fillings, to place porcelain veneers, and with other treatments requiring anesthesia. 

DIAGNOdent® Laser Cavity Detection

With DIAGNOdent® laser cavity detection, gone are the days of uncomfortable poking and prodding to find tooth decay.  Dentists can now detect cavities with great accuracy using this quick, easy method.  The DIAGNOdent® laser highlights tooth decay – even decay hidden below the tooth’s surface – so that dentists can fill cavities early on.  The procedure is comfortable and painless, and it requires no x-rays.  Contact our practice for more information on using DIAGNOdent® cavity detection as part of your next dental exam.
